It’s taking a little while to get settled, but I think I’m just about there. One of my biggest things is figuring out when I’m going to fit in exercise: between classes, socializing, studying, sleeping, and eating I don’t have a whole lot of time, but I want to find regular weekly blocks for running, yoga, and weight lifting. I’ll figure it out! Luckily all the group exercise classes at my college gym are free this week, so I am going to check out a couple. Starting hopefully with yoga tomorrow!
Today I fit a workout in thanks to my nifty resistance bands. I worked upper body (biceps, triceps, chest, back, and shoulders) along with a few butt exercises. (The goal for tonight is to do some ab work, I’ll report back if I’m successful.) I am constantly amazed by resistance bands. They’re so convenient to have around and travel with, and I’m pretty sure you can do any type of exercise. And maybe I’m crazy, but I feel like they work my muscles a little differently than regular weights. Maybe it’s the stabilization factor. Love ‘em!
Monday would usually be a run day, but my foot still hurts.
When I got home after Boston last Sunday night, the outer edge of my left foot was really sore. I figured it was just from the hours of walking we did and the combined 12 miles over two runs. I iced it periodically on Sunday and Monday, and I was fine. My next run wasn’t until Wednesday, which was just a short hill workout. It didn’t hurt after that, but I iced anyway just in case. Then all was good until my run Saturday morning. Toward the last mile or so, it started to hurt a little bit and it has been sore ever since. Sigh. Needless to say, there was no running today—’twas replaced by copious amounts of icing—and I might head over to the doctor in the next couple days. Any other suggestions?
Next item of business is my Team in Training fundraising. I am so happy and so proud of people that have donated so far, but I’m still looking for ways to raise even more since every single dollar brings us closer to finding cancer cures. I’m thinking of hosting a food-related silent auction on the blog to raise money. Anyone—readers or fellow bloggers—could donate food- or health-related items, whether it be a baked good, a special local treat, or something similar, and then the bidding will be open for probably 48 hours. 100% of the proceeds, of course, will go to Team in Training. What do y’all think? If you’d be interested in donating something, please let me know in a comment. I’ll ask for formal commitments soon. Together, we all really can help fight cancer. Bake for a good cause!
All right, now y’all are thinking…this is a big food blog, so where’s the food?! I don’t have a lot to post in that area, but I will show off one of my favorite snacks. After my little workout this afternoon, I enjoyed this treat in the comfort of my own dorm room.
I combined some Greek yogurt (not really sure how much…1/2 a cup?!) with some banana chunks, Kashi Heart to Heart, and almond butter. Yumm… (Plus, don’t you like my cute bowl?)

Above is the pretty before picture, and here is the way it looked when I actually ate it.

Off to do…dare I say it…homework.

Hello again from Boston! I was up and at ‘em early this morning to meet Kate and blog reader Amanda for a run around the Charles River. I was pleased to step outside the hotel and find that it was a wee bit chilly! I am so used to running in 90-100* that this felt like heaven. Still humid, though, and by the end I was plenty sweaty.
We set a pretty good pace at the beginning, and I was feeling fine until about mile five or six. For some reason I started to feel tired, and I think it was because my legs were sorer than usual thanks to Wednesday night’s hill workout. But I felt pretty good for the last mile and finished strong.
It was so pretty running around the river, too, though it was different not knowing the route! Wish I could run here all the time.
The three of us had an awesome time, chattering away about food and fitness most of the while, and those two lovely ladies pushed me to complete a new PDR of 8.5 miles, which we did in about 80 minutes. It felt great!
So where did the two food/fitness bloggers head to after our run? Why Whole Foods, of course.
We stopped in for a few minutes to pick up some breakfast supplies. Last night at Trader Joe’s I got some cereal and a few bananas, and this morning I grabbed a single container of Greek yogurt (since I don’t have a fridge to keep more), a small amount of freshly ground peanut butter (since I learned from a previous trip that PB doesn’t make it through airport security), and a few berries from the salad bar.

I combined everything to make a little hotel room breakfast parfait! You can’t see it, but there’s Greek yogurt and cereal on the bottom, topped with blueberries, strawberries, banana, and peanut butter.
And here’s a little “in action” shot for ya. ‘Twas a good breakfast!

I’m off to do more Boston exploring…see y’all later!

This morning was just nuts. I have no idea why, but I was rushing around and could barely keep anything straight. I finally left the house for work with (hopefully) everything in tow and in one piece.
I did have time for a great breakfast, though, no worries. I started with this:

Which I crumbled and used to top some Greek yogurt. It was so good! I love almond or peanut butter in my yogurt, so this was a great chewy way to get it in there. Plus filling thanks to the protein in the Greek yogurt (10 g for half a cup) and the healthy fat in the Larabar.

Lunch is a repeat of last night’s dinner: salmon salad with Greek yogurt, mushrooms, zucchini, dried cranberries, and red onion. Except today I’m having it with a sandwich thin.
Thanks to the aforementioned craziness, I couldn’t get a pic of the rest of my lunch and packed snacks. I’m going to be gone until I get back from my Team in Training run around 8:30 or 9 tonight, so I had to pack a lot. I’m bringing an Adora disk, a serving of Kashi TLC crackers, a string cheese, several strawberries, and a serving of Kashi Heart to Heart. Hopefully all that will get me through a hot workout later! I’m already drinking lots of water in preparation.
Coming up tonight: a run, a tasty/inventive dinner, and a very popular dessert.
Have a great day!

It was really hard to wake up this morning for some reason. But I did it and, against some of my good senses, did Level 2 and Level 3 of the 30 Day Shred. Whew. What a fabulous 36-minute workout. Loved it and it totally got me energized for the day.
After a shower, it was time for another quick breakfast. (Tomorrow’s will not involve cereal, I promise.) And although it looks similar to yesterday’s, it’s different! I promise!

On the bottom is Greek yogurt (1/2 cupish or a little more) with a serving of Kashi Heart to Heart, a sliced banana, and what looks like a whole lot of strawberries. It’s only four medium ones, chopped, but it looks like a ton. Plus a couple dots of almond butter (I’m in conservation mode because I only have a little bit left and need it to last until I go out of town Thursday).

[Funny story: I usually take several pictures of my meals and choose the best ones, but I bet I took 15-20 pics of this breakfast because it was hard to get a good one. The reason? Even after my shower, my arms were still a little shaky from the double workout this morning and I couldn’t quite hold my camera still.]

The centerpiece of lunch was leftovers of my salad from dinner out last night.

Let’s see…mixed greens, tomatoes, mushrooms, carrots, celery, sprouts, red onion, bell peppers, and cucumbers. This morning I added a few nuts and dried cranberries (the best in salads) plus a dollop of hummus on top that I mixed in before I ate it.

I also packed a sandwich thin with a little almond butter, an Adora disk, and a clementine. Great lunch!
I am so excited…I get to have a massage this afternoon! I haven’t had one in such a long time, and I am so looking forward to it. I can tell my neck and shoulders are super-tight, like they always are, so I can’t wait. It was supposed to be a couple weeks ago, but it got rescheduled. So I will see you all later as a more relaxed person.
Enjoy your afternoons!

Before I get to my triumph, here’s my afternoon snack:

Greek yogurt with blueberries and a little Kashi Cinnamon Harvest. Yummy!
So last week I completed my recommitment paperwork for Team in Training. That means I’m doing the Nike Women’s Half Marathon whether I like it or not.
This is really exciting for me, as well as a bit nerve-wracking. I’m much more worried about the fundraising than the training, frankly. If you’d like to help assuage my fears, you know where to go! See you in the morning for breakfast and a possible double 30 Day Shred.

It’s 3:30 and I’m just starting my blog post…should give you an idea of how busy my day has been. And it only gets crazier from here!
Long post today! Are y’all ready? We’ll start with dinner last night, which was prepared and eaten quickly before heading to a baseball game.

I started by cooking veggies (summer squash, red onion, and farmers’-market-fresh mushrooms and cherry tomatoes) in a skillet until soft, then I added one egg and one egg white. When the eggs were cooked, I took the mixture off the heat and added half a can of salmon. Topped with spinach, it was a great quick meal!
Breakfast this morning was a result of my lack of fresh berries.
I made a smoothie with ~3/4 of a banana, a handful of frozen strawberries, and a splash of milk (maybe 1/4 cup?). This recipe is SO easy and so good.

I paired it with one slice of French toast.

I made a simple mixture with one egg white, a little milk, cinnamon, vanilla, and a little cocoa powder.
I dredged one slice of whole wheat bread in the mix, then cooked it on both sides until done.

Then I topped the French toast with the rest of the banana, sliced, and a couple little dollops of almond butter. Yummy.

I used up the rest of the salmon can from last night in lunch today. I mixed it with ~1/4 of an apple, diced, with summer squash and red onion and paprika. Served on a bed of spinach in a whole wheat wrap! (I know I’ve mentioned it, but the trick with wraps is to pack them in foil. Then they’re a cinch to pack and eat.)

I’m going to be gone for quite a while tonight (I won’t be back home until after my late Team in Training run) so hopefully these snacks will hold me over. The last of my carton of Greek yogurt (Costco, here I come) with Kashi Heart to Heart, a Clif Z bar for my pre-run fuel, a clementine, and the daily Adora (sick of seeing those yet?). I also packed some cherries after I took the picture.

Back to the crazy day, hope you’re having a good one!

I was sitting here eating my lunch when I realized…I forgot to post it this morning! I took pictures and everything when I packed it earlier and just forgot to include it in my morning post.
Main course was Greek yogurt (the unidentifiable substance in the Tupperware on the right) with strawberries, blueberries (defrosted ones from when we picked our own this summer), and Kashi Heart to Heart. I can tell you already it was tasty, especially when I added some cocoa-dusted almonds.

I also packed some Kashi crackers, a string cheese, a clementine, and an Adora disk to round out lunch and an afternoon snack.
Back to work for me!

Too bad I can’t sleep in past 8.
Oh well! When I got up, I thought of different breakfasts I could make in order to take advantage of my extra time. Pancakes, French toast, etc… But no, all I was craving was a nice yogurt bowl. Oh well again!

Here’s about 3/4 cup of Greek yogurt with a serving of Kashi Heart to Heart (the cinnamon flavor!) with a couple chopped strawberries and half of a banana, sliced. With flax and a little spoonful of almond butter.

And all mixed up, ready to be devoured:

I woke up this morning with no soreness or tightness anywhere from my run yesterday. Which is awesome, and unexpected.
I don’t know if I mentioned it before, but after my past two Saturday runs I had an awful headache for the rest of the day. I figured it was a combination of the heat and not enough water, but I’m always conscious of how much I was drinking and couldn’t quite figure it out. So this week, I tried to up my water intake starting late Thursday. I made sure to drink plenty on Friday, as well, particularly Friday night. I drank extra water with my Clif Z bar half on Saturday morning, and I tried to take a few extra sips of liquid at each water station. The result? Success! No headache yesterday.
Enjoy your Sunday!

I won’t lie…one of my favorite things about Wednesdays are my breakfasts for dinner! It’s my little treat for myself after my Wednesday night runs.
Tonight we met in a parking garage and, after a warm-up run, did several sets of running up and down the garage. And when we were done, the whole Team in Training group headed up to the top floor and hung out, enjoying the breeze and the sunset. ‘Twas a great night! Though it’s about 10 p.m. right now and I just finished dinner.
Though my dinner looked an awful lot like breakfast:

~3/4 cup of Greek yogurt, five (I think) sliced strawberries, and one crushed Kashi Crunchy granola bar. With the obligatory dollop of almond butter. Mmm…

I suppose chronological order is usually best, right? So I’ll start with yesterday when I was at the grocery store running an errand for work (yes, I love my job). I was picking up a few things on my list and browsing the aisles when I saw it. I’ve heard the rumors for a few weeks and seen some pictures, but I have searched in my local stores and came up empty. What was it?

That’s right. Kashi Heart to Heart—my very favorite cereal—in cinnamon flavor. I was so excited and of course I bought a box.

It was conveniently time for my afternoon snack when I got home, so I broke open the box and had a little bit with some Greek yogurt and almond butter. The consensus? It’s really good! Nice and cinnamony without being too overpowering.
Now on to today. I accidentally overslept and consequently didn’t get the chance to do a little yoga this morning. Oh well. :/ But I had time to make a good breakfast and lunch!

For the life of me I could not decide what to have for breakfast this morning. I ended up making lunch first (which you can see below) while I was thinking. But then I saw a super-ripe banana (which to me equals smoothie) and I had some apple leftover from lunch, so breakfast was born. It was a really good smoothie, too, with a heavily-spotted banana, some frozen strawberries, ~1/4 cup of skim milk, and a little ground flax. And a Nature’s Path waffle with almond butter and apple slices is always good.

And lunch was a mix of old and new. Here’s my classic salmon salad with a touch of Greek yogurt, diced apple (about a quarter of a medium Fuji), red onion, paprika, and jicama. (I had some leftover from dinner out last night.)

I packed some Kashi crackers to have with my salad, plus an Adora disk, cherries, and a clementine. Happy Tuesday!
